For architects from the United States of America

Pathway 5

This pathway to registration in New Zealand is for architects registered or licensed in states or territories of the United States of America that are signatories to the Australia, United States of America, New Zealand Mutual Recognition Arrangement, signed in January 2016.

The USA signatory states and territories are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

An applicant for registration in New Zealand under this pathway must:

  • be a citizen or have permanent residency in the United States of America
  • be licensed/registered and in good standing in a USA state or territory that is a signatory to the Australia USA New Zealand MRA, as listed above
  • have completed at least 6,000 hours of post-licensure/registration experience practicing as a registered architect in the USA
  • hold a current NCARB certificate
  • NOT have been licensed/registered in the USA by means of a foreign reciprocal licensing agreement/arrangement.

Applicants who meet this criteria are entitled to registration in New Zealand, excepting that, to protect the public interest, the NZRAB is entitled to refuse to register an applicant where he or she is or has been the subject of complaints or disciplinary or criminal proceedings relating to his or her competency, conduct, or character.

To apply, please fill out and forward to NZRAB the application form. The applicant also needs to arrange for the USA National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) to forward to the NZRAB:

  • a Letter of Good Standing completed by the applicant’s home registration/licensing authority (one of the signatory USA jurisdictions)
  • a Declaration of Professional Experience completed by the applicant
  • a pdf of the applicant’s NCARB Certificate
  • a Credential/Evaluation Summary provided by NCARB.

To be registered, applicants must pay a fee of NZ$644 for 12 months (July to June) or NZ$322 for 6 months (January to June) registration in New Zealand, as indicated on the application form.
